April 14, 2010 is a gloomy day for all Chinese people. The earthquake in Yushu, Qinghai Province had deprived thousands of people of their lifes and broken numerous families. Disasters always spaw impressive stories that we stand together in those sleepless nights praying for the deceased to rest in peace and the survivors to keep tough.

In the same year, the America journalist Erik Nilsson went to Yushu as a voluteer. Restruction of the devastated area has a long way to go. Truth is that it’s easy to restruct buildings while what difficult is to restore the people, especially the children. They need ont only the substances but more about love and care.

Creating a basic living and studying environment for the children in the devastated area is what Erik has alwasy been doing. In the poor area it’s extremely hard to restruct school buildings where is too far to get access to electricity, so they have to support them with solar energy to improve the study environment. What’s more, they have to drive for more than 10 hours to the isolate village to install for them.

They had been thinking that when finished the electricity they would be able to go back home. However, when he had seen all those children wearing innocent and pure smiles with ragged clothes, Erik couldn’t move even one step to leave. They need him, and there are still too many things he can do.

It’s been 9 years since he came to Beijing. Erik is not only a kind father, a qualified journalist, he also created an organization called Step Up. Eric and his wife has been doing this since 2011 to send living substances to different poor areas in Yushu and Tibet. Besides, they also help those disabled people with their living conditions.

At present, it’s not large enough and there’s no extra finance for supporting, and most of the money are from the volunteers in their organization. Luckily, there have been more and more people who have started focusing on them and providing supports.

Sometimes, gleams deep in tunnel may not come from the light, they may born in the eager eyes of children, which is just like Erik said that behind the Step Up, there is the encouragement that carries power for moving forward.
