I recently read a quote that said our planet should have been called Ocean instead of Earth. That’s fine with me. There’s no place I like more than a spot by the sea or the ocean. The water soothes me and excites me at the same time and makes me feel like I’m in my element.

During my stay in Romania, I wanted to take a trip to the Black Sea, which borders the country to its southeast.

So I joined a couple of friends – Vlad and Vlad – a journalist and a filmmaker, who had started out on foot near the northernmost edge of the Romanian seashore, at Sulina, and were walking toward the southernmost point, VamaVeche.

Their trip lasted for almost a month and entailed walking for about 200 kilometers on the shoreline, including through the wild Danube Delta, taking pictures and video, interviewing people and posting everything in an online journal and on social media. I joined them for three days, in which we visited four seaside towns and walked about 20 kilometers by the water.

We hiked good stretches of empty beaches and saw the shore changing from sand to shells to small, forested hills. We drank cheap beer and listened to traditional party music at a rundown seaside town for the youth, and wandered through the green streets of another town, which looked trapped in the 1980s. My friends interviewed a fisherman who loved action movies and a man who literally lived in a cave. We swam and camped on the beach, under the stars.

I want to share three lessons I’ve learned – from the sea, from the stars, and from my friends.

Walking by the Sea.

There’s a certain magic in walking for hours by the sea. People, including myself, usually go to the seaside and spend several days near the same spot on the same beach during the same times of the day. Hiking by the sea can be so much more beautiful and rewarding. The sea’s constant murmur is a companion as you walk on the sand or on top of cracking shells. You can see the beach and the water change color as the sun moves across the sky. One of my friends said when he started this trip he was depressed. But after a while, things cleared out and he started seeing the colors more brightly.

Starry Skies.

This might sound like a cliché, but it’s so wonderful to fall asleep under a wide starry sky. You see falling stars and learn the sky’s geometry as you fall asleep. The next time you open your eyes, the sky is ablaze with the sunrise. If I ever happen to live right by the sea, I’d try to sleep outdoors most summer nights.

Persistence.

持久。

My friends’ trip was in itself a lesson in persistence and pursuing your passion. In a time when Romanian journalists are struggling in biased, underperforming newsrooms, the two Vlads and some friends have built a platform (casajurnalistului.ro) on which they’re telling the stories they care about. Their projects are fully funded by readers and fellowships. There have been weeks in which they survived on beer and bread, but they’re relentless in doing things their own way. Just like the sea.
