1978年，由香港丽的制作播出的电视连续剧《鳄鱼泪》开播。在长达89集的剧情中，有一个名叫“尊尼”的小角色，他的饰演者，名叫张国荣。

那一年，香港尚未回归，张国荣步入了他出道演艺圈的第二个年头。那一年，他22岁。

电视剧中有这样经典的一幕：张国荣饰演的酒吧歌手尊尼，在酒吧里吉他弹唱了一首英伦民谣《Streets of London》。青涩而忧郁的眼神，婉转又动人的民谣，构成了一幅纯粹、美好、而又永恒的画面。

张国荣选择的这首经典英国民谣《Streets of London》，是英国歌手拉尔富·麦可泰尔（Ralph McTell ）1969年的作品，收录在他的第二张个人专辑《Spiral Staircase》中，这也是他毕生最具有代表性的音乐作品。

翻唱过这首歌的歌手至少超过两百位，比如资深英国老牌歌手罗杰·惠特克（Roger Whittaker）、布鲁斯·史宾斯汀（Bruce Springs）、艾瑞莎·富兰克琳（Aretha Franklin）等等。

而在亚洲乐坛，这首来自英伦的民谣也颇受追捧，除了哥哥在电视剧中的演绎，校长谭咏麟也曾翻唱过这一作品。

在创作这首歌的时候，McTell只有二十四岁。但是，年轻的他却已经流浪多年，他正是根据自己多年漂泊的经历，以及在伦敦街头卖唱民谣时的感受，而激发了灵感。

这首歌，正是他想对那些内心孤独寂寞的人，所说的话。
